CINEMAGRAPHS

Making Cinemagraphs could be a fun way to freeze a subject's motion in air, water, fire or earth.

The Cinemagraph is a moving image created with a professional camera and proprietary software.  The result is a surreal moving photo in a .gif or .mov format.

All samples were designed and created by Katie Yu

Tools: Camera, tripod, computer and software.
Time: 1 minute to shoot subject.  Two hours for prep and post work.

SELFIE-DRONE

The HoverAir is a safe, hand-held selfie-drone that operates with a simple press of a button.

The pocket size drone has several features including following the subject or zooming out to film the landscape from high up.

Audio is picked up via the app on your smartphone.   No licensing is required.  If the lightweight drone makes impact, it will simply drop to the ground.

The drone doesn't work well in low light or over the water.

360 CAMERAS

I love tech gadgets and exploring unique ways of creating assets on set.

Every few years, 360 cameras make a resurgence with vast improvements.  Here are some 360 samples from a zombie movie I photographed in 2015.

After processing, the viewer can navigate in any direction with a smartphone or a click of a mouse.

Tools: 360 specialty camera, computer and software.
Time: 1 minute to shoot subject.  One hour for prep and post.

360 footage - stretched without viewing software
The videographer experiments with some BTS footage.
360 footage -  unstretched as an image file (versus video)

STEREOSCOPY

For experimental fun, I have shot in stereo around film sets.

The lens is very basic with no focusing capabilities.  Think Polaroid in quality and simplicity.  Works as a still image or video.

Sample video illustrates the use of Stereoscopy as one of the official Production Crew Gifts.

Tools: Camera, special stereo lens, computer and software.  Viewers need to be purchased in order to see the stereo effect.
Time: 1 minute to shoot subject.  One hour for prep and post.
